a nostalgic Christmas…

the cool thing about having a 2-year-old is that you can buy them whatever the heck comes to mind for Christmas. what do they know? they’re far too young to start making lists and requests and the smallest, shiniest thing will be enough to make their day. like matchbox cars. do you know those are on sale at giant food store 10 for $10!!! dutch LOVES these cars and he has enough of them already to start his own dealership, but boy for just 20 bucks we could really rack up and make that child’s day.

of course we probably won’t do that, and i have a few ideas up my sleeve already. see, i’ve been thinking back to my own childhood and my massive toy collection. i’d love to get him a few of the same items i enjoyed playing with.

and no, i’m not talking about the pink barbie convertible, silly rabbit.

  1. mr-potato-head.jpgmr. potato head. you know you loved it. i did anyway. i could play with mr. potato head for hours. hours = 10.25 minutes in kid time.
  2. rock-em.jpgrock ‘em, sock ‘em robots. this toy was actually passed down to me by my aunt, but me and my girls loved to play it. i guess we were taking all of our childhood frustration and aggression out on the thing.
  3. snoopy-sno-cone-machine.jpgsnoopy sno-cone machine. i loved, loved, loved this thing. it wasn’t all that easy to get the ice crushed, but that shot glass sized cup of ice with sugar water splashed on top was worth that hour of grinding ice by hand. and yes, i really mean an hour this time.
  4. legos.jpglegos. who doesn’t like legos? dutch has the huge ones now and loves building stuff with them. he also gets very upset and whiny when one of his lego towers has fallen apart, but that’s another story. anyway, the only thing about buying the smaller lego set is i can imagine finding these pieces everydaggonewhere-under the couch, in his bed, in the refrigerator, in his potty… might have to rethink this lego idea.
  5. lincoln-logs.jpglincoln logs. for some reason i can still remember what these things smell like.
  6. view-master.jpgview master. i loved playing with the view master, but it always made my eyes and the bridge of my nose hurt. but so what. i’mma get him one anyway. they’ve redesigned the thing so maybe the 2007 version won’t be as bad as the 70s model.
  7. tomy-owl-clock.jpgtomy clock. i might have to pay a pretty penny for this one because i think it’s only on ebay. but anyway, i had at least four or five toy clocks in my room growing up. yep, my mama made sure that a sista learned how to tell time.
  8. toy-record-player.jpgrecord player. oh, this is another oldie but goodie. i don’t think they make these suckas anymore, but boy, were they good times, or what?
  9. hoppity-hop.jpghoppity hop. my neighbor bought one of these for her son this past summer and dutch loved it just as much as i used to love mine. nothing builds strong calf muscles like a good ol’ hoppity hop.
  10. hungry-hungry-hippo.jpghungry, hungry hippo. i think i’ll buy dutch this just so i can play with it. but then again, maybe i need to wait a year or two on this one. i’m not really interested in waiting for white marbles to pass through poop.

  • The Tomy clock is awesome! I like it.

Last year we had one of those like #10. You know what the kids did with them? Took ALL THE BEADS out, somehow, and tossed them around the house. I threw the thing away.

Our girl is 2 as well and she loves blocks. There are lots of options at our store with various price ranges. Both her and her brother also loves to bead, the bigger beads are so nice for that.

  • i know… toys with pieces. i love to hate them!! ha!

please check out ms. sweetisu’s store: http://www.kangarooboo.com/

  • Snow cone machine: Loved loved LOVED this.

Lincoln Logs: Built my fantasy homes with this.

    View Master: Magic.

    Hoppity Hop: Timless.

Great… now I want to go out and buy toys… for ME.

  • I had some of these, but I also thoroughly enjoyed Light Bright, Teddy Ruxpin (not quite sure I spelled that right), and Kid Sister. Now of course you wouldnt get him a kid sister, but hey, they might still make My Buddy!

  • My mother usually buy it for my baby brother to play, but I love to play with them too.. =)
